What is the Difference Between MEP and HVAC?

Based on your style, size, and nature of the house you live in, there are two main forms of utility systems you can choose from. These include the MEP and HVAC systems. MEP stands for mechanical electrical and plumbing parts of the house. HVAC on the other hand stands for the heating ventilation and air conditioning system of the house.

You can agree that these systems may be hard to understand even though you may have been using them in your house for years. This can be attributed to the sensitive and critical nature of anything related to electricity. System Design

MEP is a rather complex design that incorporates three major and important aspects of our houses. The mechanical part includes heating and ventilation devices such as fans. It may also include CCTV and door alarm systems, as well as lifts and escalators. The electrical aspect includes installations such as sockets, bulbs, switches, and appliances. The plumbing aspect includes water and sewerage installations. It may also include hydroponics and the common irrigation systems outside the house.

HVAC on the other hand is a simple design that incorporates the heating ventilation and air conditioning aspects. It is important to understand that HVAC is a single system while MEP design incorporates different aspects.

Cost of Installation

As you may have noted above, MEP incorporates different services into one definition. For this reason, they are usually more expensive. This is because it has to be done by different technicians that deal with escalators, lifts, alarm and CCTV, electrical, and plumbing. Each of the installations comes at different costs and this makes it expensive. It would have been cheaper if a single technician did all these systems. However, since one technician cannot do most of these services, we have to pay for the cost.

The installation of an HVAC system is cheaper compared to MEP. This is because only one technician installs the system. However, they have to have special knowledge in the system and this translates to reduced costs of installation.

Functionality

An HVAC system is designed for balancing the quality of air inside the house. The system is usually automatic and is designed to heat the house when it becomes too cold during the winter months. It also cools the house when the inside gets too hot during the hot summer months. This means that you do not have to turn on and off these different components manually. The automatic nature of an HVAC makes it very efficient, compared to the MEP.

MEP on the other hand incorporates many different services, all of which are done by different technicians. Therefore, if one aspect of the system for example ventilation fails, the other aspects will not work. This can sometimes be an inconvenience because you have to call in a technician; otherwise, you will not enjoy quality air in the house. In short, the MEP involves most of the installations done during the construction phases of the house.

Repair and Maintenance

It is only one technician that is needed to repair and maintain a HVAC system. When a ventilation aspect, for example, fails, the same technician will rectify it and at the same time check the other components, and this makes the repair and maintenance of the system less, compared to the case with MEP.

With MEP on the other hand, repair and maintenance costs are higher. When the plumbing aspects fail, for example, the plumber will only repair the plumbing components but cannot do any other aspect since they do not have the necessary skills. However, the main advantage of MEP is that the failure of one component does not affect the rest of the aspects. This is because not all the aspects of MEP are interconnected.

As you have seen, MEP and HVAC systems are quite different. An MEP is quite complex and requires more in terms of labor and maintenance compared to a HVAC. If you decide to go with any of the two systems, it is always important to land a highly qualified and licensed technician to do the installation. At the same time, it is advisable to call in a technician to do the repairs and maintenance of such systems. This is one of the many ways to ensure the durability of the systems.
